1. College Registrar – Prof. Sarah Coupland

2. Council Member of England North – Dr Alexander Haragan.

3. Chair of Royal College of Pathology’s Research Committee – Prof. Keith Hunter

Together, Sarah, Alex and Keith will ensure that there is sufficient input into the College workings from England’s North West, representing its College members and trainees in the 17 different laboratory diagnostic specialities of the College.

A massive well done to Sarah, Alex and Keith on these achievements!

Biomedical Science Day 2023 https://www.liverpoolcl.nhs.uk/2023/06/07/biomedical-science-day-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=biomedical-science-day-2023 Wed, 07 Jun 2023 15:12:57 +0000 https://www.liverpoolcl.nhs.uk/?p=2094

To celebrate Biomedical Science Day 2023, Natalia Carpenter, one of our senior biomedical scientists, shares her journey into Biomedical Science and her role at LCL.

Natalia in the Chemistry department at our Aintree lab

Hi, I’m Natalia, I work as a senior Biomedical Scientist (BMS) in the Biochemistry department at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories. I am based in the lab on the Aintree Hospital site, where I’ve worked for almost 22 years. Coincidentally, I was actually born on the labour ward on this site when it was known as Fazakerley Hospital.

Although I did a Biomedical Science degree at Manchester University, it wasn’t accredited by IBMS, so I applied for a trainee position in Biochemistry, they offered to fund my top up modules which involved one afternoon a week at Manchester Met University.

Luckily, there was a job for me after I got my registration (with HCPC’s predecessor, CPSM). I worked for 12 years as a specialist BMS and then successfully applied for a senior post which also included a training officer role. This was a new role to our department and my role initially involved learning about the IBMS portfolio and help guide 2 of our trainee staff through to registration.

I think the training part of my job is what I find most satisfying. Seeing trainees and placement students from when they first set foot in the lab through to when they become professionally registered is really rewarding to witness. I’ve helped 18 trainees through the verification process now and performed 9 verifications as an external verifier. It’s lovely to deliver good news to trainees and tell them how their hard work has paid off.

We’ve always has a good team here at Aintree and we are working more collaboratively with our colleagues at Broadgreen and Royal Biochemistry than ever and this is set to increase in the future. I feel very well supported in my role; there are some fantastic people here and I feel lucky that I get to work with them every day.

We are an unknown entity to a lot of people – they know they get their bloods taken and that there are results at the end but what happens in between is often a mystery. We offer lab tours for hospital staff and they are always surprised at the scale of the laboratory. I think it’s important to highlight the work of biomedical scientists. We are an integral part of the patient pathway.

We may not be patient facing but we are always mindful that behind every sample, there is a patient and clinician waiting for results. I am proud to work in Biochemistry at LCL, and for the NHS.

Healthcare Science Week 2023 https://www.liverpoolcl.nhs.uk/2023/03/14/healthcare-science-week-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=healthcare-science-week-2023 Tue, 14 Mar 2023 10:21:23 +0000 https://www.liverpoolcl.nhs.uk/?p=2066 With it being Healthcare Science Week, we thought it would be a good opportunity for us to shine a light on the hard work of our staff and all the effort that went in to moving from the Duncan Building to CSSB on the site of the new Royal Liverpool Hospital.

We spoke to Awtad Hassan, one of our Medical Laboratory Assistant working in clinical trials to find out more about the move and the benefits for patients and staff. Awtad joined us a year ago, so has experienced working in both the Duncan building and CSSB.

“Since moving to CSSB we now have updated analysers and pre analytics in Biochemistry. We use the Roche Cobas 8100 in the CSSB which is more efficient and requires less human intervention in comparison to the MPA (Modular Pre analytics) which was used in the Duncan building.

All the samples loaded are sent to the suitable analysers for testing, and samples that have no outstanding tests are sent automatically to the fridge. If the sample needs to be retrieved it can automatically be done so, rather than manually, which was the case in the Duncan.

Previously in the Duncan building we had three analysers whereas in the CSSB there is four, which allows for more sample testing, therefore increasing our turnaround time for patient results.

With the advanced technology in the new lab, there has been a big change in the turnaround times which are shorter and more efficient. Having all departments working close together allows for better communication/processing, overall providing a quality service for effective patient care.”

It’s great to know that the move is benefitting both patients and staff.

We want to say a huge thank you to all our staff – those involved directly in the move and those supporting from our Aintree and Broadgreen sites!

Liverpool Clinical Laboratories recently submitted a nomination for the Chief Scientific Officer’s Healthcare Science Awards for 2021.

We are extremely proud of the work that is being carried out every day by our staff in the LAMP laboratory, which is currently the best performing LAMP laboratory in the country, and we feel that this hard work and dedication deserves recognition.

The submission included a slide presentation which tells the story of our LAMP Laboratory during the Covid-19 pandemic and was delivered at the Chief Scientific Officers Conference. Click here to find out more about the labs and why we’ve nominated our staff for this award.
